RUC & Loopie - quick answers
Do I need GPS to manage RUC with Loopie?
- No. Loopie uses odometer data to calculate distance. There is no GPS, no location tracking, and no unnecessary data collection.
Is Loopie NZTA-compliant for RUC?
- Yes. Loopie is being developed to meet NZTA certification standards while keeping your data private and secure.
Which vehicles does Loopie work with?
- Loopie works with most vehicles built after 2006 that have a standard OBD port. We are testing across a wide range of NZ models to ensure it performs reliably for everyday drivers.
Do I need to buy the Loopie device?
- You can manage RUC through the Loopie app, but the device makes things easier by keeping your distance readings accurate without manual entry. It is optional, but it saves time and removes the guesswork.
How does Loopie actually work?
- Loopie connects to your vehicle’s OBD port and reads your odometer data. It syncs with the Loopie app, where you can view your distance, purchase RUCs, and manage your account. Your information stays on secure NZ servers and is never sold or shared.
How are RUC payments handled?
- You can buy and renew your RUCs directly through the Loopie app or desktop dashboard. Payments are processed securely, and your digital licences are stored in your account for easy access.
What happens if I unplug the device?
- No worries. The device keeps your readings stored locally and will sync once you plug it back in. You are always in control of your data.
Will Loopie track my driving habits or location?
- Never. Loopie does not record where you go, how fast you drive, or any personal data. It is designed to track distance only, nothing more.
Is Loopie 100% NZ owned?
- Yes. Loopie is fully New Zealand owned and operated. Our team, suppliers, and partners all live and work here, and we are proud to support local jobs and innovation. Every dollar we earn stays in the New Zealand economy.
When will Loopie be available?
- We are currently in prototype testing and NZTA integration stages. Public availability is planned ahead of the 2027 universal RUC rollout.
